Technical Writer - Contractor

As a Technical Writer, you will drive knowledge management initiatives, produce engineering documentation that meets the goals of our clients, and contribute to the overall success of our products. You will join a team of talented Tech Writers who work collaboratively with developers, quality engineers, product managers, and usability experts, both internally within SPAN and for our clients, to deliver high-quality technical documentation for engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Produce high-quality, well-structured engineering documentation that meets the learning objectives of the intended audience
  • Work with internal and client-facing teams on product and services engineering documentation, from requirements to completion
  • Manage documentation and knowledge management projects to completion within timeline and budget targets
  • Work with consuming teams to obtain an in-depth understanding of the solution, and the documentation requirements
  • Design the structure of the documentation deliverable, using our pre-defined templates and procedures for knowledge management solutions
  • Identify relevant learning objectives for each area of the documentation
  • Analyze and inventory existing and potential content, identifying opportunities for reuse, and areas where new content is required
  • Create and maintain new content that meets the specified learning objectives
  • Coordinate the review and approval process with the customer (internal or external), ultimately securing their acceptance and signoff of the end-to-end deliverable
  • Estimate in advance the time and effort required for each initiative, creating a high-level plan, and an accompanying resourcing estimate
  • Deliver the project in line with the agreed plan and resourcing, escalating issues and risks in a timely manner as they arise

Requirements

  • Proven work experience in technical writing, creating engineering documentation, or equivalent technical content
  • Ability to deliver high-quality documentation with attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts, and to articulate them clearly in text, graphs, and diagrams
  • Project management skills are necessary to track the different strands of work, the people and teams involved (internal and external), and to follow the status of each workstream to completion
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Extensive experience working in a team environment
  • Strong working knowledge of Google Suite
  • Experience working and managing agile engineering projects
  • University degree in Technical Writing, Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience working in a customer interfacing environment
  • Experience of learning-based systems and documentation
  • Working knowledge of Content Management Systems (CMS)

Additional:

A 9-month contract working with prestigious clients in Cupertino and Oakland. You should be based in The Bay area and will be required to occasionally travel to meet with clients.
